« Flying Gar Feeding Frenzy

Spotted Gar (Lepisosteus oculatus)

Bookmark the permalink.

I was lucky enough to witness (and fish) a gar feeding frenzy on the Big Muddy River in southern Illinois, with Shortnose (Lepisosteus platostomus), Longnose (Lepisosteus osseus) and Spotted Gar (Lepisosteus oculatus) feasting on Gizzard Shad (Dorosoma cepedianum). June 2017, on the way home from the annual convention of the North American Native Fishes Association (NANFA) in Missouri. The full story of this epic gar morning is at moxostoma.com/garfrenzy. (The fishing action was so relentlessly intense that I only took a couple of photos. This is the only shot of a Spotted Gar.)
